Wyangala Dam upgrade good news for Lachlan river irrigators as the total potential capacity is increased. The good news also comes as the dam level has reached over 20% for the first time in some years.
The Wyangala project is one of seven dam safety upgrades being completed as part of the NSW Government’s $350 million investment in ensuring dams can withstand the most extreme conditions.
The $43 million Wyangala Dam upgrade includes:
- Raising the chute wall on the downstream spillway to ensure it can withstand the most extreme floods;
- Raising the existing spillway radial gates 1.4m higher and installing a brake locking system to the gates; and,
- Raising the dam crest by 1.8m by provision of an upstream parapet wall,
- A new $12 million bridge will be built across the Lachlan River downstream of Wyangala Dam to ensure continued access for Wyangala village residents during and after the dam’s upgrade.

REGYP and DATS release the new “Plasterboard Only” waste bag.
The plasterboard waste bag will allow builders the flexibility in site space, on-site waste separation and ease of collection.
One bag will generally be enough for the plasterboard waste generated in the construction of one single dwelling house and two bags for a double storey house.
For more information and pricing on the new “plasterboard waste” bags please call
DATS on 1300 00 DATS or REGYP on 1300 4 REGYP.

New Hope Coal believe that the proposed tax could reduce earnings on Australian coal mining operation in Australia by more than 10%.
In the absence of draft legislation or implementation details, it is difficult to provide reliable information to shareholders on how the proposed tax would impact coal mining operations. However, based on the limited information currently available, initial modelling suggests that long term returns from mining operations would be reduced by more than 10% due to the increased tax burden.
The government has clearly stated that it expects to raise $10.5 billion in revenues from this new tax – revenue that can only be raised with a proportionate reduction in the earnings of projects affected by the tax. While the direct impact will be borne by mining companies and their shareholders, the indirect effect of this new tax will no doubt touch employees and their families, suppliers to the mining industry, mining communities and the wider Australian population, all of whom depend on the sustained profitability of mining projects.

Irrigators on the Murray Darling basin system are worried that neither political party has committed to releasing a water plan before the election.
The irrigators are unsure of potential water buy backs and requirements for environmental water flows, which could leave their intensive agricultural businesses and properties in a non commercial position.
Farmers, companies, banks and communities are hamstrung by the delay of the plan due to the uncertainty that it is creating.

The Bligh Government will create new green jobs, stop Queensland being Australia’s dumping ground and pour unprecedented funding into recycling and the environment through a levy on industrial waste going to landfill.
Ms Bligh said the industry waste levy would commence on 1 July, 2011, however, unlike other States, it would not apply to households. “We need a waste management system where recycling is the default option over landfill, Queensland is no longer seen as a viable destination for interstate dumpers, and more unwanted materials are given a new life by someone else.
She said the industry waste levy would be charged at $35 per tonne for general waste and $50 and $150 per tonne for low-hazard and high-hazard waste respectively, with the largest portion of funds raised by the levy (totalling about $380 million over four years) being reinvested in helping the transition to better waste practices in partnership with councils.”

Lettuce is the pick of the crops.
Ed Fagan of “Mulyan” from Cowra, a user of Super Ag Gypsum, grows up to 4 million tonnes of iceberg lettuce annually which the majority is sold to fast-food chains such as McDonald’s, KFC and Subway.
”The drought has been good for our business,” he declares. Annual turnover has increased five-fold and provided employment to 30 people since he and his brother James and their parents, Peter and Jenni, decided eight years ago to switch to more water-wise production.
Previously they grew thirsty summer crops such as tomatoes and sweetcorn on their 1350-hectare property, which relies on Wyangala Dam and the Lachlan River for irrigation water. But when it dropped from being full in 2000 to less than one-tenth of its capacity in 2003, they decided to switch to lettuce, which guzzled less of the precious drop.
Lettuces need 1.5 megalitres of water to every hectare compared with nine megalitres for both tomatoes and sweetcorn and five megalitres for beans.
Mulyan also produces lamb and white and red grapes for their premium wine labels “Mulyan” and “Bushrangers”.

MELBOURNE’S CBD has gained another 5-star NABERS energy-rated building, with the office tower at 530 Collins Street. It now operates one of the city’s few on-site co-generation plants on its roof.
The co-generation plant, together with lighting and fitout upgrades and water-efficient cooling towers, will achieve the 5-star rating, according to the owner, GPT Wholesale Office Fund Group. The building uses 40 per cent less energy than a building of comparable size and age.

The country’s biggest grain handler, CBH Group has warned that WA’s lack of rain could cause a 30 per cent drop in crop yield in the key growing areas.
Western Australia accounts for about one half of the country’s wheat exports.
Recently the grain price has been rallying due to poor crops in Europe and Canada, which would mean WA and Australia will miss out on what could have been a good year for wheat growers.

Where does gypsum mining stand?
The tax will apply to all mining and petroleum extraction projects other than current projects which are already subject to the Petroleum Resources Rent Tax (although there will be special provisions to allow these projects to, by election, transition to the new tax).
In advancing the introduction of the Resource Super Profits Tax (RSPT), the Henry Review recommended that low value commodities (such as brown coal, gypsum, lime, limestone and phosphates) be excluded from the tax. The Government has rejected this, arguing that these producers will benefit from transitioning to the Resource Super Profits Tax.

High tech companies have called for a less draconian, more flexible approach to ”greening” old buildings to encourage small business to spend money on refurbishments.
But apparently the approach taken to date in Australia only applies to buildings with lettable space and space for sale of more than 2000 square metres. This is a good start and has been a long time coming, but in the US, they have mandatory reforms but also tax incentives on energy efficiency, regardless of size.
The new Australian scheme mandates disclosure of a building’s energy efficiency. A valid National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) energy rating will be required. Credible energy efficiency information must be given to prospective purchasers and lessees of large commercial office space. Failure to comply will incur severe penalties.
