Natural Gypsum
Gypsum (CaSO4 2H2O) is one of the most common natural minerals and is actually a form of rock. It is available in mines in several countries. The major locations of high quality mined gypsum in Australia are in Ceduna South Australia and Dampier Western Australia.
Although in good supply presently, there is only a limited supply available worldwide, so steps to preserve the natural gypsum resources should be taken. Recycled gypsum is a sustainable substitute saving natural resources and energy mining and transporting the gypsum from remote mine sites around Australia. It is estimates that recycling 1000 tonnes of waste plasterboard can reduce the gypsum industries CO2 emissions by 41 tonnes by reducing mining and shipping operational impacts.
